while yik wanted to call me yesterday, Wada-san (kinda like the farm representative) told me this morning that a girl called his mobile and asked for me last nite when he was on the plane from tokyo back to hokkaido (who’s this? anybody knows?) . so i guess its time i should find an internet access to say hi to my dear family n friends.
i guess my first host really wants to make sure i have a good taste of a farmer’s life here. on a hard day i work from 5am – 5pm. yes! no typo here, 12 hours it is, with 1-hr lunch break n i sometimes help out washing dishes in the second half of my lunch hour too! but don’t worry, i am not being taken advantage of and used as a cheap labor. to have 2 full days of holiday on this sat n sun, the host n i have agreed to work on 7-5 on tue, 7-12 on wed, 7-5 on thu, 7-12 on fri 😉 but then, becuz of some kinda putt golf event on next sat, the boss of the farm asked his workers to practice at 5 IN THE MORNING 😕 so i have to wake up at 4:30, play putt golf frm 5-6ish, have my breakfast, then go to the mass meeting and start my day at 7am.
yes, its very tiring, especially on the days when i have to work till 5pm. but i guess that’s what i conciously or subconciously looking for — something new, something fun, a very different experience 😎 n definitely i got it. so i should have no complain here huh. haha
n probably becuz i work hard all time, i have good appetite n eat much. they have very good food here, very fresh! the milk in the kitchen is today’s milk, the cucumbers, lettuce, strewberries, etc, etc r all picked in the morning. plus, they actually runs a small restaurant here when there is no farming to do in the winter, so the cook is very good! n there is always more than enough food. we have a tea break at 10am n another one at 3pm. n becuz i m exhausted by the end of the day, i sleep very well at nite, very early indeed. 9pm last nite. really… life of a farmer here (woke up at 4:30 for putt golf practice this morning )
weather here is good in general. in the morning n at nite, when there is no sun, its cold, like 15C or so, but when its sunny, its hot like 28C or so.
n as for work, i have mainly worked on the veggie this week. for example, i helped packaging the veggie and delivered them to the supermarkets. i did a lot of weeding (quite tiring), weeded a lot of pumpkins n did some red beans today. i also made some raw cream n did some gardening work as well. n as i requested during lunch today, the farm will let me work in their barns where their pigs n cows r 🙄 hehe
o yes, maybe i will learn how to make cheese too!
ok, while i am fine with the working hours, there is one thing that i really don’t like about this place — it’s very inconvenient for those who doesn’t have a car. it takes 15 mins to bike to the closest convenient store, and buses to a major JR train station comes only every 45 mins or longer. so! i can really go nowhere unless i have at least a half day off. n by noon, after 1 hour of putt golf + 5 hours of work, all i wanna do is nothing but chill at my place
so now i m planning to cut one of my farm stays a few days short so i can do some real sightseeing in hokkaido.
ok. that’s it for now. let me update you again sometimes later.
here r a few pix i took. sometimes i will bring my canon ixus 850 with me to work. but since i dont wanna act like a tourist when working, i usually take a pic n put it back into my pocket as quickly as possible hehe 😛
Weeding red beans
Having our 10am tea break, with mugi tea, snacks, bread, n candies, yes. picnic everyday 😉
Milked this morning 🙂
Looking forward to working in the barns next week
Luckily I got a ride from a coworker, else it would take like 25 mins or so biking from the barn back home…
